Chiropractor in Herndon : Dr. Gurutrang Singh Khalsa

"Why don't you become a doctor?" I'm thinking "That's a good idea!."

I'm about nine-years-old, growing up in my hometown Baltimore during the Sixties.  The Baltimore Colts are my favorite football team.  My dad Leonard Freedman is an attorney in practice with his father Mike.  Just about every Thanksgiving at the grandparents home the family mentions, "Why don't you become a doctor?"  I'm thinking "That's a good idea!".

In Seventy-one, I'm a junior in high school, when I begin my personal wellness quest including long distance running, Kundalini Yoga, calisthenics, meditation and a well balanced vegetarian diet.  I am learning Kundalini Yoga directly from the master Yogi Bhajan, who is also a Sikh.  With that inspiration, I too become a Sikh, grow my hair and beard to their natural full-length and don a turban!

My Chiropractic Career Path

Then one day in 1972, my neck goes out on me and I visit the local chiropractor.  He gently adjusts me as good as new and I think, "I'd like to do this".  I realize that chiropractic, a natural approach to health care, goes along well with my personal wellness lifestyle.  So I make the decision to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.  And that's how it happens - Thanksgiving dreams fulfilled!

My Pre-Chiropractic Education

I do my undergraduate work at Towson University and then transfer to the University of Maryland at College Park to complete my pre-chiropractic science education requirements.

Chiropractic Education & Continuing Education

In 1977, I am accepted into the prestigious Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), now called the Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, California.  In four solid years of full-time study, we cover anatomy, physiology, neurology, orthopedics, chiropractic technique and philosophy, radiology, psychology and many other courses within the nearly thirty five hundred hours required to become a doctor of chiropractic.  I mean, it's a rigorous course of study and clinical practice and after it's all done, I graduate in 1980.

I sit for the National and Virginia State Board Exams and am granted my license to practice Chiropractic by the Virginia Board of Medicine in 1981.  I am also licensed by the State Board to practice Acupuncture in 2000, after the required course of study.

The Chiropractic Technique I Enjoy Practicing the Most

At my Herndon chiropractic office I primarily enjoy using a gentle approach to the Diversified Technique (DT) which is the most commonly used manipulative technique by chiropractors.  Its objective is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.  Having an extensive understanding of yoga and the acupuncture meridian points, I also enjoy using gentle acupressure and exercise to help my patients achieve balance.

My Practice Philosophy and Objectives
Detecting and Correcting Subluxations

My practice philosophy is that the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) controls and coordinates everything in the body and mind.  When nerve energy flows abundantly without obstruction, the body and mind are 100% self-communicating, self-healing, self-regulating and robust.  When subluxations (nerve interference or damage) impede nerve flow, similar to static on a cell phone, a person is no longer functioning at 100% and their health and vitality are compromised.  Subluxations are caused by a person's inability to handle life’s three major stressors; physical, mental-emotional and chemical.  Left uncorrected, subluxations have devastating effects upon human health and well-being, leading to breakdown, malfunction and dis-ease.  My objective is to locate subluxations, remove them and their causes and allow patients to heal themselves on every level.

I find that subluxations are more of a health problem than just a back problem.  Along with lifestyle, subluxations may relate to a patient's chief concern and even other health issues.  Left uncorrected, subluxations and health may tend to degenerate and worsen over time.  If we correct subluxations and show patients ways to quit recreating problems in the future we find that they may not only feel better, but they may also prevent problems in the future, help reverse the affects of the aging process and actually have a better quality of life.

My Family and Hobbies

My family and I have lived in Herndon, VA since 1980 including my beautiful French wife Gurumata Kaur, who is also my office manager and my awesome son, Shabd Singh studying International Studies at the University of Oregon.  During my personal time away from my practice, I enjoy playing the guitar, singing, writing, performing and recording music.  I enjoy golf, love to cook and I love my good old hometown, Baltimore Ravens!

My Chiropractic Health Habits

I visit my chiropractor about once per week for wellness adjustments.  I feel much better when I do.  Adjustments help me meet the physical demands of my line of work and maintain a strong immune system!  I don't drink alcohol or smoke tobacco.  My family and I are lacto-vegetarians and we look to organic, healthy foods.  We are also practitioners and instructors of Kundalini Yoga and arise early in the morning to practice, which helps us maintain a consistent state of excellent physical, mental and spiritual wellness.

Vaccinations and Referring to Medical Doctors

Regarding vaccinations - Research the pros and cons.  There may be links to Autism.  Regarding antibiotics, medications, over-the-counter pain relievers or other forms of health care - I believe in a conscientious approach.  I always like to go natural and drugless first but then I refer my patients for medical care should their condition require it.  I like to utilize the best of both worlds.

I Would Like to Help You!

Well enough said about me!  What I want to know is how can we help you with today’s safe and natural chiropractic and acupuncture care?  I consider myself an excellent listener.  I hope I have the opportunity to meet you in person and discuss your specific health challenges.  Thanks for visiting our site.
