Introducing Herndon Chiropractor, Dr. Gurutrang Singh Khalsa
So I'm like nine-years-old, growing up in my hometown Baltimore during "The Wonder Years". My Colts' Johnny U is the greatest quarterback of all time. My dad's a lawyer. His dad is a lawyer and every Thanksgiving the family says, "Why don't you become a
doctor?" And I say, "What's wrong with being a lawyer"! Then in Seventy-one, I'm a junior in high school. I begin my personal wellness and spiritual quest; long distance running, yoga, calisthenics, meditation and a well balanced vegetarian diet. It's kind of like my Forrest Gump phase, you know, when he takes that run! I get into great shape and achieve an unsurpassed level of vibrant wellness as a result. I'm singing and writing songs on the guitar, making homemade bread and studying with an awesome Spiritual Teacher, Kundalini Yoga and White Tantric Yoga Master, Yogi Bhajan, who is also a Sikh. www.sikhnet.com. He gives me my spiritual name which relates me to my destiny, Gurutrang Singh Khalsa meaning "Master of Resounding Unto Infinity" or "Master of Good Vibrations". It is through my practice, his inspiration and example that I become a Sikh, full turban and all. And that's how it happens - Life is like a box of chocolates... You never know what you're gonna get. And here I am!
How I Chose My Career Path
One of the cool sayings I appreciate from Yogi Bhajan is, "I have not come here to create students. I have come here to create teachers". Well, "doctor" means "teacher" and from that early beginning in the wellness/yoga lifestyle, which is more popular today on our planet than ever, choosing chiropractic as my career path is an easy step. I'm already using herbal remedies, homeopathics, yoga and meditation on myself. I'm teaching lots of Kundalini Yoga classes, waking up at 4:00 AM everyday to do my two and a half hours morning practice. I'm playing spiritual music on my guitar, singing and writing songs and having a good old, healthy, happy, holy time. Then one day, my neck goes out on me. So I visit the local chiropractor. He gently adjusts me as good as new and I say, I'd like to be a chiropractor too. I call up my parents and say, "Guess what? I am going to be a doctor, a Doctor of Chiropractic"! And that's how it happens - Thanksgiving dreams fulfilled! Okay, so it's not MD, but DC is so cool. Oh yea!
My Pre-Chiropractic Education
I do my undergraduate work at Towson University majoring in science and music and then transfer to the University of Maryland at College Park to finish my pre-chiropractic education requirements. Go Terps!
The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic
In 1977, I get accepted to the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), now called the Southern California University of Health Sciences relocated to Whittier, California http://www.scuhs.edu/. We cover anatomy, physiology, neurology, orthopedics, chiropractic technique and philosophy, radiology, psychology and many other courses within the nearly thirty five hundred hours required to become a doctor of chiropractic. I mean, it's a rigorous course of study and clinical practice and after it's all done, I graduate in 1980. I sit for the National and Virginia State Board Exams and am granted my license to practice Chiropractic by the Virginia Board of Medicine in 1981 and Acupuncture in 2000 after the required course of study.
The Chiropractic Technique I Enjoyed Studying the Most
In my early studies, I mostly like the total mind-body-nutrition triad approach of Applied Kinesiology, AK, http://www.icak.com/, which uses diagnostic muscle tests in conjunction with standard examination and treatment of the acupuncture meridians, spine and extremities and the neurovascular and craniosacral systems. I am inspired and trained by its founding master Dr. George Goodheart, an LACC graduate himself and Dr. Wally Schmidt, DC of Chapel Hill, NC. I still have Goodheart's blue metal business card that says in Latin "Numquam mendacium dictio corporea dicit, The body never lies!"
The Chiropractic Technique I Now Enjoy Practicing the Most
Today, I have consolidated my AK methods with the updated Koren Specific Technique or KST http://www.teddkorenseminars.com/ This is a healthcare protocol that I use to efficiently improve patient results and expand my ability to help others. Many patients describe it as "The best adjustment I ever had in my life!" It allows me to quickly and easily analyze and adjust the structural system for subluxations: cranial bones, TMJ, the entire spinal column, pelvis, pectoral girdle, sternum, coccyx, ribs, extremities - anything/anywhere. I can adjust disks and immediately know if the subluxation was corrected. The technique is Low Force. No "cracking" patients, no drops, no pressure, which saves my hands, arms and shoulders, allowing me to not hurt myself while gently and very effectively helping others. I can adjust patients standing, sitting and lying and locate and release anxiety or panic (fight/flight) subluxation patterns. KST allows me to correct "Dowagers hump" patterns and get results from the most chronic and difficult conditions. It's gentle enough to use on everyone - from infants to the very elderly. I can even specifically analyze and adjust myself, allowing me to stay healthy too every day. With this method alone, although I use the following high-tech diagnostics, I can know exactly where to adjust without X-rays, computers, MRIs or other analytical equipment, when to adjust and whether or not I have corrected the subluxation. That's how powerful it is. Typically I see real changes from the first visit including immediate postural changes and I am not pounding on the same subluxations visit after visit. I am treating what the patient's body and mind needs moment-to-moment, visit-to-visit. Spines start healing and people start holding their adjustments for longer periods - and they refer more than ever as a result. I can tell that this technique is powerful when I see dramatic retracing or unwinding in patients - where both deep mental and physical stresses are being released.
My Practice Philosophy and Objectives
My practice philosophy is simplicity and gentleness in chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture. The body is really cool, like a grid of points and energy patterns. If you know how to sequentially unlock the stress, amazing things tend to happen. Mostly, I utilize KST and employ laser or micro-current auriculotherapy to the external ear without needles. Patients like that. It's painless and quite effective for a wide array of conditions. Maintaining balance through chiropractic and acupuncture can help a person to live healthy and happy for many years.
My Family and Hobbies
My family has lived in Herndon, VA since 1980 including my wife Gurumata Kaur and son, Shabd Singh who is now doing his pre-chiropractic education at the University of Oregon. Like father, like son! (He's a pretty good guitar player, songwriter and singer too!) During my personal time away from my practice, I enjoy playing the guitar, singing, writing, performing and recording music. I enjoy golf. I love to cook and mostly... I love my good ol' Baltimore Ravens!
My Health Habits
I receive chiropractic and acupuncture care daily for wellness. I actually adjust myself with KST each day and I visit my chiropractor about once per week. I feel so much better when I am adjusted and my acupuncture meridians are balanced. These help me to meet the physical demands of my line of work, maintain a strong immune system and stay on the up-and-up! I work out three times per week. My family and I are lacto-vegetarians and we are also regular practitioners and instructors of Kundalini Yoga.
Regarding vaccinations - Research the pros and cons. There may be links to Autism. Antibiotics, medications, over-the-counter pain relievers or other forms of health care? I believe in a conscientious approach. I always like to go natural and drugless first because this approach is usually quite effective, often gets to the underlying causes rather than treating the symptoms and obviously, has far less side-effects. I do often refer my patients to their primary care medical doctors or to specialists should their condition require it. I like to utilize the best of both worlds.
